Physicians

David E. Mangold, M.D.

General Surgery

Dr. Mangold has been in practice since 1978 and still loves taking care of his surgical patients. He was in the first graduating class of Texas Tech School of Medicine in 1974 and obtained his surgical training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Mangold then returned to practice in Lubbock, Texas and has been here ever since. He does a broad spectrum of general surgery. His interests are in breast and robotic surgery having recently completed 1000 robotic cases. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons and remains certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Mangold has 3 children and 3 grand children who are his primary sources of joy outside of his surgical practice. He has always been an avid runner and has completed 9 marathons and multiple other races and triathlons. He also enjoys attending sporting events and snow skiing.

Melinda Beth Nickels, M.D.

General Surgery

Dr. Nickels is a Texas Tech graduate and was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas. She is a Board Certified General Surgeon and has been a fellow in the American College of Surgeons since 1995. Her surgical training was at the University of Mississippi in Jackson and Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. She joined SWAT Surgical Associates in 1995. She is trained in all areas of General Surgery and Trauma including breast surgery, hysterectomies, pelvic and rectal prolapse, gastrointestinal surgery, hernias urinary and fecal incontinence and laparoscopic procedures. Dr. Nickels is the owner and Founder of Rescued Animals Second Chance Horse Sanctuary. She and her late father, Don, started this charitable organization in 2013. Her free time is spent taking care of horses and supporting Texas Tech Red Raiders!

Charles V. Bayouth, M.D.

General Surgery

Dr. Bayouth is Board Certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. His undergraduate degree was Biochemistry at Texas Tech University. Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. General Surgery Residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. His operative experience is in Thyroid, Parathyroid, Breast, Biliary, Pancreatic, Colorectal, Foregut, Hernia, and Trauma/Emergency General Surgery. He performs open, laparoscopic , and robotic general surgical operations and joined SWAT Surgical Associates in 2002. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Bayouth is the Trauma Medical Director at Covenant Medical Center and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. When Dr. Bayouth isn’t in the operating room he enjoys spending time with family and exercising. He has been passionately involved in medical missionary work for many years. Dr. Bayouth was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas and have been blessed and honored to be able to care for patients from Lubbock and the surrounding region for many years.

Richard A. Rosen, M.D.

General Surgery

After graduating fromTexas Tech University School of Medicine in 1984 with Honors, Dr. Rosen completed his General Surgery Internship and Residency at Lubbock General Hospital and Affiliated Hospitals in 1991. He has been a partner with SWAT Surgical Associates and Lubbock Surgical Associates since 1991. He is certified by The American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons as well as a member of The American Hernia Society. He has been selected a “Texas Super Doctor” by Texas Monthly Magazine since 2013.

Travis D. Eggl, D.O.

Bariatric Surgery
General Surgery

Dr Travis Eggl is board certified in general surgery and fellowship trained in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He grew up on a farm and ranch in North Dakota. He went to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and then medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of South Alabama, finishing his training with a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Eggl now has a bariatric and foregut surgery practice in Lubbock, Texas, with West Texas Bariatrics at SWAT Surgical Associates, a comprehensive multidisciplinary weight loss program serving West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. He is the bariatric surgery medical director and vice chief of general surgery at Covenant Medical Center. Dr. Eggl performs a variety of laparoscopic and robotic gastrointestinal surgeries including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, bariatric surgery revisions, LINX procedure, fundoplication, paraesophageal/hiatal hernia repair, and reflux surgery revisions. He is a member of ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery), SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons), and ACS (American College of Surgeons). Dr. Eggl is married and has two daughters and two sons. He enjoys spending time with his family, riding horses, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing.

Adam K. Purtell, M.D.

Bariatric Surgery
General Surgery

Dr. Purtell is a Board Certified General Surgeon, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as a Fellow in the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch medical school in Galveston, TX. Dr. Purtell completed surgical residency at Texas Tech Health Science center and completed Fellowship at UT Houston at Memorial Hermann specializing in minimally invasive and robotic surgery with a focus on Bariatrics, Foregut and Colorectal surgery. His current practice involves minimally invasive and predominantly robotic surgical approaches in Bariatrics/Bariatric revisions , foregut/hiatal hernia repair and revisions, colorectal surgery, abdominal wall hernias and other traditional general surgery procedures. Dr. Purtell was born and raised in Lubbock, TX and outside of his surgical practice his time is primarily devoted to spending time with his wife and 5 children. He enjoys participating in sports and exercising, attending Texas Tech football and basketball games, fishing, and hunting.

Rebeccah B. Baucom, M.D.

Colon & Rectal Surgery

Dr. Rebeccah Baucom is a double board certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon and General Surgeon affiliated with the Joe Arrington Cancer Research and Treatment Center. Dr. Baucom is a native Texan. After completion of medical school at UT Southwestern at Dallas, she completed her residency in General Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She completed her fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. After fellowship, she joined the faculty at Texas Tech University Health Sciences center where she developed the first dedicated colorectal surgery practice in the region. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and is an active member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Baucom’s clinical expertise focuses on colon cancer, rectal cancer, anal cancer, inherited colorectal cancer syndromes, as well as other benign disease of the colon, rectum and anus. Dr. Baucom is excited to be a part of the multidisciplinary team at the Joe Arrington Cancer Center and SWAT Surgical Associates.

Caleb R. Sallee, M.D.

General Surgery

Dr. Sallee is a board certified general surgeon. He completed his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech, continued his medical training and residency training in Lubbock at Texas Tech Department of Surgery. He was the first Resident from Texas Tech to get DaVinci Robotic surgery certified during residency and joined SWAT Surgical Associates in 2015. He enjoys serving his patients being capable of providing a very wide range of surgical procedures. He performs over 700 procedures a year ranging from simple lumps and bumps to the most complex cancer surgeries and everything in between. Statistically most of his patients need gallbladder or hernia surgery, but a close third would be the cancer surgeries he is also able to provide. These include breast, colon, stomach, skin, thyroid, and soft tissue sarcomas. He also performs a wide range of minimally invasive surgeries both laparoscopic and robotic assisted. He currently serves as the Medical Director for robotic surgery at Covenant Medical Center. Excellence in surgical care combined with compassionate stellar communication is what Dr. Sallee provides every one of his patients. Dr. Sallee spends his time with his wife, two daughters, enjoys golfing, hunting, a variety of sports activities and spending time with all of his family and friends. He is honored to be able to serve the communities of West Texas and New Mexico with all of their surgical needs.

Sammy D. Rivas, M.D.

General Surgery

Dr Sammy D Rivas is a Board Certified General Surgeon who is also a fellow of the American Board of Surgery. He is pretty much a Texas boy who resided in Lubbock most of his life starting in High School at Monterey. He attended Texas Tech and the University Health Science Center getting his Bachelor’s in Clinical Laboratory Science. Then attended Medical School and completed his Surgery Residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center. He joined Dr Woolam and Dr Mangold in private practice for a year before moving to Albuquerque for three years as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center. There he was also the Medical School Clerkship Director in the Department of Surgery. He returned to Lubbock and joined Lubbock Surgical Associates. This group later merger with SWAT. Dr Rivas performs a variety of laparoscopic surgeries, with special interest in robotics to include foregut, gastrointestinal and various types of hernia repairs. He also performs thyroid, breast and various soft tissue excision. Dr Rivas is currently the Chair of the Surgery Section at Covenant Medical Center. He is also involved in the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery program at Covenant Medical Center. Dr Rivas is also a member of the American College of Surgery. Dr Rivas is married and shares six children with his wife, Amy Rivas. He enjoys spending time with his family and working out in his spare time.

Derick R. Haggard, M.D.

General Surgery

Dr. Haggard is board certified with The American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons. His general surgery residency training was at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He was one of the founding members of Lubbock Surgical Associates that has since merged with SWAT Surgical Associates. Dr. Haggard is currently the Chief of Staff at Covenant Medical Center as well as on the Board of Directors of Covenant Medical Center. Dr. Haggard specializes in minimally invasive procedures and has extensive experience in laparoscopic and robotic techniques. His interests include diseases of the colon, breast, gallbladder, and thyroid. He also performs hernia repair and reflux procedures. Dr. Haggard was born and raised in Lubbock and has lived his entire life in West Texas. He enjoys time in the mountains with his wife and three sons. He is an avid sports fan and attends many Texas Tech sporting events. He is a member of the Red Raider Club as well.

Dr. Brian J. Norkiewicz MD

General Surgery

Dr. Norkiewicz is board certified in General Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He attended the University of North Texas in Denton, TX as well as the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He did his surgery training in Lubbock, TX at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Dr. Norkiewicz has over 25 years of experience in treating general surgery and trauma patients.
